Can the FPR be bad and NOT leak fuel? I've worked on my truck a lot trying to get it to run right and today it seems like it's fouling it's 3rd set of plugs. I even took it to a shop to have it diagnosed and they couldn't find anything wrong. I have checked grounds and vacume lines ect. and replaced many parts.

There is an orange wire that goes from the rear of the passenger side cylinder head, is that wire still intact? It will run very rich if it isn't good.

Yea I checked that wire,I read about it an earlier post but thanks. I was hoping it was something simple like that but no dice.

I have a fuel pressure tester you could borrow if you were closer, but I don't think the drive would be justifiable. That is the only way to know if fuel delivery is the problem.

did you pull codes?

When it was at the shop the guy said it didnt have any codes set but I havent checked it myself again yet. Physco I appreciate the offer but I found out my cousin has a pressure gauge and I might go test it tomorrow. The idle also bounces up and down and that really bugs the crap outta me. A friend who does mobile vehicle diagnostics said that would likely be the TPS. I did set that awhile back but it would only go down to 1 volt. I'm wondering if the TPS could make it run rich if its telling the computer the throttle is open further than it really is?? The IAC is new. It did run really good.....for one day. I figured out the hard way the temp gauge not to accurate as it was showing right in the middle but was too hot. I got a fan and clutch at the junk yard and now it runs cool but the plugs seem to be getting bad again since it isnt running so hot. I really hope it isnt the FPR because it seems like it would be really hard to change. I did find one at Rockauto.com for $28 which is MUCH cheaper that Autozone or Advance its like $86 there!

FPR is easy. Get the quick disconnect plastic guys. Insert em, pop the line off, take the two mounting bolts out, unplug vacuum. Pull kinda hard, install in reverse. Takes 20 mins if you've never played with quick disconnects, 5 minutes otherwise.

The manual and other guys on here say that you have to take the upper intake off and the remove the fuel rail on an 87'. Have you done it on your 87' without doing all that?

FPR replacement on my '87 2.9L did NOT require fuel rail or intake manifold(?) removal. I did have a bit of a problem getting the new unit to seal properly and ruined at least one o-ring. You do NOT want this thing leaking.

1st a question about the FPR,the picture of the new one they show at rockauto.com doesn't have the plastic fuel line on it,does the old one have to reused and if so how do you switch it? Do they usally come with the line and O-ring? I feel a lot better knowing I don't have to take everything apart! 2nd,here is what I got today from the pressure gauge: When I turn the key ON it jumps up to 70 lbs then drops to 40 and slows down but still drops to 20 where it slows down more but still drops down to around 11 to 13 lbs. With it running it shows around 85 lbs and is "bouncy",when I rev the engine or pull the vacume line it makes no change. To me it sounds like the FPR is bad and the injectors are dirty. I really appreciate the advice guys,I like driving this truck and I really want to get it running right. It also seems like the return line could have a blockage but if I can get a new FPR for $28 then I'll blow out the return line while I have it off.

IS the fuel pressure readings from your old FPR or a new one?

it should not spike to 70 or80 PSI:shok: SHould be 40 PSI with KOEO and 35PSI with KOER or there abouts +- 5psi

If the readings are with a new FPR then I'd say that it is bad out of the box.

Thats the readings on the old one. I hope to order one tomorrow and change it ASAP. I'm hoping for an answer about the new FPRs I asked in the previous post. Thanks :)

The new FPR will come with a short rubber fuel line & 2 clamps. You need to cut the line connector off of the old FPR and use the rubber line & clamps to reattach the return line connector to the new FPR. Make sure you grease the o-ring and slowly tighten the 2 bolts going back & forth between the 2 tightening them just a little at a time. If you ruin an o-ring, the injector 0-rings are the same. I ruined the 1st o-ring both times I replaced mine on my 86 & 88. I used a dielectric grease since I have a free supply of it.

Thanks for all the advice y'all. I ordered a FPR from rockauto.com on Wed. and paid a little extra for 2 day shipping and it got here today around 1pm. It was only $28 plus $12 for shipping. Advance wanted $86! I got it put on in about 15 min or so. I put a little grease on the O-ring and tightened it slowly and evenly and no leaks :) I started it and still smelled some gas in the exhaust but after running a bit it cleared up and just smells like exhaust :) Before when I had checked the vac line to the FPR it didn't have gas in it and didn't even smell like gas but this time it did smell like gas. Also I sent an email to the shop I took it too and they replied that the fuel pressure was 37psi when they checked it,they worked on it for 4 hours but couldn't find a problem. I believe it was sticking and just didn't fail when they had it. I let it run today enough to warm up and idle down and it stayed steady at 850 rpm :) I'm gonna wait to drive it until I change the oil tomorrow so I'll let you know how it does, thanks again.
