I have a 1991 ranger xlt 4x4. i want to run skyjacker 6" lift without the skyjacker coils, leafs or shocks.

i want to run coil overs in the front. so far ive been looking at the fox 2.5's..

are these the best shocks for the cost? any other recomedations?

does the remote chaimber do anything? are these shocks good for the ranger?

are the dampening and compression valves adjustable like motocross shocks?

do i need to put my truck on a scale to pick springs?

kings are nise too but look expensive....

im going to be using the truck on 33"s and running woods trails fast, jumping on occasion, its more of a prerunner for rough trails.

i want to get as much travel out of the front as possible

should i run sway bars? or what?

ive got a ton of questions :icon_bounceblue:

thanks guys

a 2.5 is fine for rangers, bigger than that is just more money for not much more gain. the reservoir is extremely helpful too, it keeps your shocks from overheating and failing faster than if you didn't have them.

as far as what is "best," you, me, or anyone else who will most likely post in this section will not be able to tell the difference between a Fox, King, Sway Away, Radflo shock. pick a color and buy them.

yes, compression and rebound valving is changeable just like a motocros shock, if you can work on that stuff, you can re-valve these shocks no problem at all.

f-o-a.com has a spring rate calculator on their site. i haven't used it myself, but people i know have and they say it worked out pretty well for them.

you can look for used shocks on race-dezert.com or dezertrangers.com or you can get new ones from f-o-a.com i run them all around my truck and have no complaints you could probably get away without running remote reservoir since you will be running on smooth roads and jumps only

foa's upgrade to remote resi is only like 25 or 30 bucks if I remember correctly, definitely worth it if your blasting washboarded roads.

You really dont even need a 2.5 it would be a better investment for you to buy a 2.0 coil over and then a 2.5 bypass shock they are pricey but they are alot easier to dial in and get everything set up nice you will need all the tuning you can get because your not going to cycle alot of wheel travel just like me im only pulling around 12 with my current set up and its 5 1/2 bent beems but that will soon change with the right size shocks ill cycle 15 with the coil bucket. you really dont even need to go to a c/o set up with a skyjacker lift. id stay away from FOA f'ed on arival..... they are sad I have 2.5 piggy backs on my truck and blow them constantly there almost as bad as Racerunners...

You blow them constantly? Almost as bad as race runners? I'm offended..

I am a S-A-W guy.

FOA's are what they are. A budget shock for typical off road toy. The machining work in the beginning was questionable. There were a few problems I have seen with the casting of the end caps and the coil spring hardware. To my knowledge they don't cast those parts anymore. As far as seals. They are fine... maybe there's a different issue if your rebuilding them "constantly".

I never had an issue with race runner's. I think you are just bull headed and hate the color red..

Foa are good shocks I love them aslong as they are working like they should and I thought that too till I had them rebuilt by a friend that does it all the time. and still blew them I beat on my truck pretty hard though so I do realise I need better shocks there just 16in 2.5 piggy backs in the rear of the truck. and I love the color red how dare you. I think with FOA you ither get a good set or a bad set and I just happened to get a bad set.

FOA has put a lot into their shocks recently mainly in quality control. From what I understand, folks were mocking up the shocks without charging them with nitrogen thus not properly seating the seal giving the illusion that they were "blown" out of the box.

I'm not saying they are a fox or king, but they are definitely a consideration if someone is pinching pennies. I've also heard great things about FOA's customer service, have you tried contacting them? I know some of the earlier models had burrs in them that my be "blowing" them up prematurely.

All this said, i'll be ordering my fox's very soon.

yea thats the only reason I still have them I live in vegas so it makes getting rebuild kits really easy

i love my FOAs. no problems, no leaks, nothing inside of them except what should be there. i went to order new seals and when i opened the box their entire new wiper cap assembly was in there, not a cheap piece to throw in free for a $25 high temp seal kit. and Chris @ FOA also sent me 4 new spherical bearings for free so i can replace mine. can't beat their customer service unless you're a racer or have deep pockets at another company.
