What do I need to get it in, I have a 4.0 and it's coming from behind a 351w bronco.

Getting tranny, shifter, transfer case, and shifter for it.

I'm coming from auto so I will need clutch pedal, master, slave, lines, clutch, flywheel, and do I need a bell housing to make it work?

Let me know, thanks,

T

You need a small block V-8 and a trans tunnel that is about 2" taller than stock. There is NO bell that makes a ZF fit a 4.0.

I'm not sure if advanced adapters makes anything for that.

With his ride being a '90, I think he already has an M5OD-R1.

Like adsm08 said, you'll need a small block Ford V8. I believe that ZF5 has an integral bellhousing which means it will spend the rest of its days behind a small Ford V8. Unless, you can have an adapter made that matches the 4.0 and V8 bellhousing patterns up, but it's probably not worth it if it's even possible.

ZF made more than 1 trans. Some have a removable bell, but if I remember correctly, the SBF ones aren't, making this statement correct.

The other problem with putting a ZF in a Ranger is like I said before. The trans tunnel is too short.

I saw a build, may even have been on here, don't remember for sure, where a guy put a 351 and a ZF in his B2. He had to hack out the top of the trans tunnel and raise it 2 inches to make it fit, and even then it was like a black pornstar in a Japanese virgin...

tight fit.

You'll need a plate that bolts to the 4.0L block and is also drilled and doweled to represent the back of a 351W (standard SBF pattern) so the ZF will bolt to it.

Concern needs to be had for the flywheel. Length is going to be important, as is 1 of 2 possible solutions:

A flywheel machined and balanced to fit on a 4.0L crank, to hold the ZF clutch/pressure plate OR
A clutch disk/pressure plate that will fit on the 4.0L flywheel and have the correct spline count for the ZF.

Honestly, It'd be easier to go for the gusto and drop in a 302 while your at it. It will probably cost less, and give you less headaches.

Agreed. And on top of all that, an EFI 5.0 isn't that hard and will give about the same fuel economy as a 4.0.

Thanks guys for some reason i didn't know there were any things added to this post, thanks for the good information, I decided not ot pick up the ZF-5, it was from behind a diesel and was not in that great of condition, I'm back to square one, eitehr built A4LD or M5OD which if I could find a good running donor truck would already be done.

I have a Forged 306 I built for one of my old stangs sitting on an engine stand now but it's only the shortblock and it will be a good year before I have the Time needed to throw that in, not to mention the 4.0 only has 72k on it in the truck, so not something I want to do right now - goal for this truck is Daily driving with ocasional playing in it.

Did score a 6 inch Superlift front lift for 100 bones though:O)

I'd still have taken the ZF. I bet I can find 3 or 4 places/people that would do a straight trade, rough ZF for good condition M5.
