go ahead and use it (my design for the mounts and the chassis saver). my friend is using the chassis saver on his camaro and hes been very happy with it (page 17, post #251) and the shovel and hi lift mounts are just 3" muffler clamps with some 3/8 rubber fuel line on the u-bolt portion and some vaccum tubing that i slit down one side and slid onto the clamp portion. ive been working on converting this boat trailer into a dirt bike/ utility trailer so that ill have a place to haul my bike once i put a truck box in the bed to hold all my crap. it had a 16ft. fiberglass tri hull boat on it that i got for free about 6 years ago. i had dreams of making it into a sweet fishing/ party boat with a canopy and some bench seating around the sides, but i knew it would be a bigger project than i was ready for, so its time to recycle it (i actually chopped it up with a sawzall and took two truck loads to the dumpster and work).
its an old Diley tilt trailer, so it will be perfect for riding lawn mowers, 4 wheelers, 2 dirt bikes, or whatever i need to haul. i got new seals,bearings, and races yesterday and installed them this morining. i picked up an LED lighting kit for it that im hoping to install tomorrow as well as a new tongle lock thingy (it captures the ball on your reciever).
i got this wooden talon from my cousins when they moved to Alaska this spring, my dad and i were helping them clean out their garage by loading up anything we wanted that they couldnt take with them, and i found this in the bottom of one of the boxes we took when i was unpacking it. since i just recently found her on face book i asked her what the story was behind it, it used to ride along in their jeep when they had it so i knew it had been to some cool places.
here was her reply; Greg got that when he was in Costa Rica, so long ago he can't remember what year...because he's getting old and forgets stuff. I'm pretty sure it's got some teeth marks in it from when Soady and Ella were puppies. It's been to Canada for most of our Jeep Jamborees, Drummond Island, the extreme reaches of the UP, Wisconsin, every beach in Genesee County, and probably a bunch of places I don't even know about. Glad to see it's still on the road!
ive compared the two and i feel that they are equal products, but since i started using the POR15 i just stuck with it. the metal ready prep spray is a must if you want it to stick to bare metal (i didnt find out about it until AFTER i had painted most of the frame), other wise its not worth the extra steps if you are painting over old paint or primer.
i dont know what to tell you man, ive used it over e-coats and other paints and it sticks fine (im not a professional painter and i dont always follow directions either, my tachometer was a perfect example haha!). as for how long it will stay i dont know yet, its only been on there 1/2 a year, but i dont think theres any paint product that will really last a life time.
i made some more progress on the trailer during lunch today, i stripped off the old lights, got my dust caps on, mounted the tounge latch, and tried to run the new wirer but they kept wanting to get wadded up in the tounge, so ill do them tomorrow. im thinking about painting over the frame with black rustoleum in a paint can and then painting the wheels to match the blue on my truck. i still need to enlarge the deck area and see how well the tilt funtion works, but at this rate i should have it done by the end of the week.
thanks topher, i seem to have gotten a little off track here but im sure ill get centered again. ive spent the last 2 hours trying to research Dilly trailers and ive come to the conclusion that this trailer is from the early to mid 70s and was built in Lancaster, Texas by Green & Green MFG. im unsure of its weight rating, as someone has painted it several times and i dont see any mfg plate on it, but im sure that since it held that boat for as long as it did a couple of dirt bikes and even my john deere wont phase it.
So when you gonna put a v8 in that thing. I know you got a new shiny motor in there, but a 302-351w would be way sweeter.
Wow $9k into it already and still a few more thounds to go be for you get it the way you want it. What else you got planned for it?
i dont have any plans for an engine swap on this one, im planning on driving it to infinity and beyond so the 3.0 is probably the best choice for now. i still need to build a back bumper and tire swing for it, it needs paint, new tires (ive been borrowing my little brothers wheels and tires for a couple months now). im going to be building a differential guard for it since i had my first rock encounter today, that could have ended badly. last night i spent a couple of hours in the dark with a streamlight flashlight on my head running the wires for the trailer. i picked up some LED sidemarkers for it today and got everything temporarily hooked up with wire nuts so i could verify everything worked before i cut the decking boards and start painting. i had my youngest brother help me shuffle things around in the yard after i was done with the trailer and we moved the parts truck out back (got to use the 'duck bill' finally), flipped my boat over for the winter and parked the trailer on some boards to save the tires, moved the 4 place dirtbike trailer around, and repositioned the old suzuki snowmobile so i could fit everything in the space allowed.
i wish i had a bumper on the rear i trusted to tow from cause its hard to keep em both lined up in reverse! i almost smashed my rear diff cover on a rock pile as i was going around the yard!
