Good lord. That's insane. But I guess it's comparative to Jiffy Lube, they charged me about $60 for a "high mileage" oil change. That only happened once.

ford dealers are independantly owned, just because one dealer has crappy service doesnt mean the next will.

we actually have a good group of guys working at the dealership here. the service manager is kind of a dick but hes easy enough to avoid.

Wow, I've always said that you guys in the States have it made when it comes to pricing.

Those prices would be cheap up here - though our dollar is worth less (by 10 - 15%, on average - the exchange rate fluctuates).

Buying a liter of oil, just normal stuff, nothing special, will run about $4.00/liter (my 4.0 liter V6 takes 4.7 liters of oil); the filter will run from $5.00 to $10.00; so that's about $25.00 to $30.00 for the materials.

Shop rates where I am average about $100.00/hour at dealerships, so that's another 1/4 hour for the oil change, or about $25.00 labour.

Grand total, less taxes, just for the oil change will run about $50.00 - $55.00 (CDN) not counting taxes. Figure calculating another 1/4 hour labour (usually the smallest increment that they charge) for tire rotation service or about $25.00. That would work out to $75.00 - $80.00 by my calculations.

Ask yourself if you could do it for less, and the answer is naturally, "yes".

Factor in the overhead and labour that the dealership has to cover, and I think you'll find it's not so unreasonable.

Just my opinion - it's not as bad as you think.

I don't think he was complaining about the service; I think he was complaining about the pricing - at least that's how I interpreted it.

i dont think that pricing is out of line considering the logic you entered in your previous entry. the only reason you can get it done cheaper at a shit hole oil/tire shop is there paying their guys $10 an hour and use the cheapest bulk oil and cheapest filters they can find. at ford they pay their shop guys well and use motorcraft filters/oil.

Id personally never pay $60 to get my oil changed. 5 quarts of motorcraft 5/20 and mortocraft filter comes in at under $20. Im the most mechanically uninclined person in the world, still change my own oil.

$60 to do an oil change and tire rotation is right in line at the shop I work at, North44 has it pretty close with pricing (within a few dollars here and there), and to think, that $60 for oil change and tire rotation is actually putting me behind on time sheets. Oil change and tire rotation takes me roughly half hour to do (with under hood inspection, and a quick suspension check and taking a quick look at the brakes while the wheels are off). Hourly labor rate at my shop is just below average in my area of Calgary at $110/hour (at a private shop, $135/hour at "exclusive" dealerships, and about $125 at most domestic and Asian dealerships), half hour of work is $55, so that leaves $5 for parts. Parts come to roughly $15-20 on the average vehicle (and prices will go up if parts come to more), so lets say parts cost $20, and labor for a half hour is $55, that comes to $75, we charge about $60, depending on the car, but in any case, the shop is losing money, is the service checks that we have to make it up on.

Oil changes now are almost a lost cause with shops, they have to do them, and they have to do them cheaply, but at a point where it is not a huge loss to the business. $60 for an oil change and tire rotation is quite reasonable in my area, and as things seem, prices are just going to keep on going up.

Don't feel alone. My local ford house is as worthless as tits on a rattlesnake. I also agree that looking at a shop owner's point of view that it's not that bad of a deal, but I wouldn't pay that either. There is something to be said about oem parts over aftermarket though. Sometimes the stuff you get from the other parts houses isn't neccessarily better than what you took off. I have felt your pain on surprise bills too! I just ordered ball joints for my powdersmoke and dropped $185 on just the joints.

I can't argue with someone who changes his/her own oil/filter because it's cheaper - makes sense if you have the know-how.

I can't argue with someone who changes his/her own oil/filter because they like to do it; or because they would rather do it themselves; or for any number of reasons that someone would want to DIY.

I can't argue with someone who wants to do their own work (mechanical or otherwise) on their own trucks/cars/anything else that they own.

But looking at the other side, if you don't like someone's pricing (for whatever job/service), don't automatically assume it's overpriced.

Check it out before you jump to conclusions.

I did my own oil till i found a shop nearby that does it for 17 bucks

cost me 20 to 25 to do it myself and i have to find a place to dump it, or they can do it for a few bucks cheaper

but it doesnt make all that much sense to pay someone to rotate the tires

Yeah Our shop charges about 60$, and we even have to pay full price for the car quest oil, which is like 7 bucks a quart for some reason.

I went to walmart got me a 6$ fram tough guard and a 25$ 5 qt jug of mobil 1 full synthetic. cheapest change i've done in a while.
