Ford 8.8 Question

Is the bare carrier the same from a 31 spline axle(Explorer) as a 28 spline axle(Ranger)? I'd assume bearings could be different along with the spiders but stripped down are they the same carrier? I've found retailers that show the same bearing kit for both axles though so I am not sure.

To my knowledge, both use the same carrier bearings and possibly the same carrier. Side gears are what are different. But again, I could be wrong so someone please correct me.

When I did my gear swap, 8.8 bearings were 8.8 bearings. regardless of spline count. gears are the same too.


*OHHHH!!!! 31's have a 3/4 or 7/8" center pin. 28's have a 5/8 or 3/4" center pin. Can't remember either/or. but it's one size for each spline count. and they're different.

All '87&newer 31 spline 8.8s have the 7/8" cross shaft.
'83-'86 and all 28 spline 8.8s have the 3/4" cross shaft.

Pinion bearings, carrier bearings and the R&P gears are the same in all 8.8s.
