i found a ford 8 inch out of a 74-79 gran torino today. just wondering if its gonna be worth the trouble of restoring it to put under my ranger. its a little smaller than a 9 inch and has a third member but iv never heard of the 8 inch before today so any help would be welcome.

Little-to-no aftermarket, and a weak housing. Not worth it.

Go 8.8" (or 9").

thanks guys. after i dropped the axle out of the car i went back to the all the dead cars at my work and found not one, but three 9 inch axles. and the best part there all free. (they all belong to my boss and he wants them gone.) so im gonna take a bunch of photos and measurements ands see which ones gonna be the best candidate for my truck. next step, finding a solid front axle.

i had an 8 inch in a 78 mustang II with a bored and stroked 351 w and a 4 speed and the weak link was not the 8 inch it was the tranny. i never had a problem while running the 8 inch and it was dynod at 680 hp. the hardest part was finding 5 lug axles for it and 5 lug rotors for the front.

So take them all so you can pick the housing that fits best, the gears you like the best if they are different and end up with some spare parts to keep as spares or sell to fund some of the rest of the project.

If your Ranger is a wheelin rig turning big meats then I would make sure the 9” you get aren’t 28 spline. If they are then the only strength gain you will get from you current axle will be the ring and pinion. Not really worth it if you ask me unless its 31 spline.

8.8 31 spline should be around 150 bucks and alot stronger. there is little to no diff from 8.8 to 9 inch and its bolt on.
