Ford 302 Oil Pan - Help!

So I have a 68 302 Block.

I picked up a 85 Ford Bronco Rear Sump Pan, thinking it would fit. It looks IDENTICAL to the oil pan that was on it (problem with the original pan is that its been patched.. I prefer to know my oil is gonna stay where its suppose to).

But once I put the pan on, its not as identical as it looks. Its about 1/4" or so off (wider) so that half the bolt holes dont line up properly.

I would like to stay with a rear sump setup, since thats the pickup I currently have.

Any suggestions?

Just as fyi... this 302 is going into a Ranger.

Was the bronco pan for a 351?

i'm sure that its not a 351 pan... i looked on several other sites reporting the same pan for the 85block, it was a spectra premium pan.

Well, I think I have a good idea whats going on here... I think Spectra Premium has a bad batch out here in my area.

I took this pan which was from AA over to NAPA and compared, exactly identical. So I took what I had back home to look at it further. A bunch of the holes on these are very near to the lip.

So I have 2 other 302 blocks from different years... exact same problem with those blocks that the pan doesn't line up correct for the holes.

So now I'm going to be calling around town tomorrow to like the 10 or 15 auto shops we have in this town to see if someone has a non-spectra brand. Right now, I'm betting on that being the problem :-) Hope I win this bet!

I'll take that bet! Don't think any '85' Bronco pan will work, won't clear the cross member. Has no way of checking your oil level. You will need the dual sump pan from something like a '79' Mustang, couple of years had them. Can be pretty cheap with the correct pick-up at most auto stores. Picture below. I read the thread a couple of time before I realized you had the early block.

well... this block has a dipstick hole through the block. :-) so i shouldn't have a problem with that. (dont ask my why there is a dipstick hole through the block... but there is... and the date code on the block states its a 1968 block...)

plus i dont think i'm going to have a problem with the crossmember. if its in the way... it'll get moved. :-D

and if something doesn't pan out shortly with this pan... i actually do have a dual sump pan sitting in the garage... i just need to get a different pickup for it. i was just hoping to make the rear sump pan work, since thats the pickup i had just installed back on it after cleaning it all up.

plus being that there is a dual sump pan here... i'm sure if i dig around enough... i'll find the pickup that does with it... somewhere....

Well the date code will tell you the month and the day and the last number of the year the block was cast. It will not tell you what decade that is. Sounds more like a '88' block. Whats the casting number?

it was 8e27 6015 something or another i believe... i can double check tonight.

Should be an E8 with two letters behind it and then the standard -6015. Sure sounds like a roller block at least. May not be drilled for the spider. Not really up on my numbers from the 80's.

well... just a bit of an update... i picked up a new oil pan from a different manufacturer... (finally found someone in the area carrying ATP instead of Spectra). Same year, etc... and the holes are different... by about a 1/4".

So hopefully this fits good when I get home and it'll explain why nothing fits... everyone in Midland has bad batch of oil pans from Spectra... lol. 3 places, same exact pan and brand... all of them drilled the same, except the 4th pan from ATP was different from the rest :-)

i'll update with the block codes when I get home tonight too :-)

i had issues with the rear sump pans going in my truck so i went with the dual sump pan should be golden and mine is 2wd not 4wd

Ok these are the casting numbers on it...

Well
8e27 - Would be May 27 of 1968
0 c80e 6015a - Don't what the "O" is in front but C8OE 6015 A makes it a 1968-69 block. Got to see that hole in the block you mentioned ealier, thought I had a picture stuck away here somewhere.

Edit: Just happened to think, how many bolts are holding on the pully at the crankshaft?

Totalled drilled the hole in his '68 302 block.

I was rather unimpressed with the fit of the dual sump pan in my 4wd... dunno of anything else that fits though.

The O is for a Torino / Fairlane Block (from looking it up..)

I do know that the hole in the block is EXACTLY where it is where the dent is on an oil pan for an 85 ford bronco 302.

let me go check the crank shaft bolts real quick...
