So I’m new to the forum. And I’ve been searching for a while and can’t find any sort of cassette timing chain for my ranger. I’ve got the famous chain slap and when ever I look up the timing chain stuff I always get stuff for newer engines or it’s just the main chain. Will the newer engine chains (96 and above ) fit my 95 ranger?

Everything I'm finding says the 95 -2000 4.0 OHV use the same timing chain kit

Alright good to know. Because I’m rebuilding the Transmission and thought I’d also replace the timing chain since I’m in the general area

HUH?

Transmission is on the back of the engine.

The only timing chain you have is on the front of the engine

Not on the OHV. They have the infamous ford V6 special. They have a timing chain in the front and in the rear. And my cassette chain is the one that is slapping. And in order to replace it you have to remove the engine

No, the 4.0 SOHC has front and rear timing chains, they started in the 2001 Rangers

The 4.0 OHV that came in 95 Rangers only has 1 timing chain

Really. Because everywhere I’ve read says that the timing chain is in the front and rear. And how would it have 1 timing chain. It needs at least three to run from the crank shaft into all the cam shafts. And I know it doesn’t have one single big chain because I’ve had almost the entire front face off except the timing cover and it didn’t have any signs of being one big chain. And it would be costly to do that

Yes I’ve went over my VIN code. Put it into shop key pro. And it reads 1995 ford ranger XLT Super cab manual 4x4. Which is what I have and on the upper intake it reads 4.0

Ford has 2 different 4.0

95 4.0 OHV notice the cylinder heads, only has 1 timing chain

2001 4.0 SOHC, again, notice the cylinder heads, has multiple timing chains, the front has 3

Here let me run out to my truck and I’m gonna make sure the Vin in the door and windshield match. Because if not then I’ve been buying the wrong parts for my truck. When did they change OHV. Was it changed after my year or was it changed later

But also my truck is a bit of an oddball. It has a manual 4x4 with manual hub lockers and I’ve never seen another one like that. They all use push buttons before and after my year. So idk if that’s the year they messed around with it or what

Vin read 02/95 so I’m an early 95. But I got the interior of a 95

You have a OHV engine, only 1 timing chain

The 4.0 SOHC engine (with multiple timing chains) was first used in 97 in the Explorer and then 2001 for the Ranger.

If you have some kind of slapping noise in the back of your engine, it's not a timing chain.
