for those who have broke a 7.5

x2, spiders are junk. had to help a buddy pull another carrier this week after the spiders let go and took the carrier out in a 95 2.3 2wd ranger.

i wouldnt put a dime into a 7.5 when an 8.8 will bolt right in.

Hans-

What are" super style" carrier shims?

I posted this question because I have a 7.5 with 4.10's and a lsd and was thinking i'd keep it.

For what it's worth, I helped build a 300+ hp 5.0 for a friend and it when in to his mustang. He autocrossed the car and generally tried to blow up the 7.5 in it and we never could.

Thanks

I read awhile back that they were used in drag racing but im skeptical about it. I will say after reading all of this an 8.8 will be put in my truck.

But then why do people say these axles are bullet proof though and are in drag racing applications?

They might be able to stop a smaller bullet, but I don't think there is such a thing as an indestructable axle.

8.8's and 9's break too, even in their factory applications.

Im just saying now that I plan on having fun with the truck, turns out that my rear axle could be my weak link. In any matter if I do blow it out, its 8.8 time (and find one with 4.10 gears in it too).

"Super Shims" are an adjustable carrier shim design that uses two interlocking side plates and a shim stack sandwiched in between them to set backlash & carrier bearing preload. You add or remove shims between the side plates to obtain the necessary thickness, lock the outer plates together, then hammer the shim packs into the housing.

From the factory, Ford used cast carrier shims. The shims were one piece, and installed at the factory to be a specific thickness, meaning that there is no way to adjust backlash (which is necessary when installing a new ring & pinion). Additionally, the cast shims often break when you try to hammer them back into place.

Other aftermarket carrier shim systems (of the non "super" design) use adjustable shims, but the side plates do not interlock. This makes them difficult to install & achieve proper preload on the bearings, because the thin inner shims don't want to stay in place while you try to hammer in the shim pack.

For any axle housing that uses external shims to set backlash and carrier preload, the super shims are definitely the way to go.

Here is a pic of the "super" style shim setup: (Note the raised lip on the plates located one in from the left in the picture - this allows you to stack the necessary number of thin shims (the multitude of rings located towards the right hand side of the piture) onto the plates, and then lock them in place using the pieces located all the way to the left hand side. The complete, assembled units act as your carrier shims and get hammered into the housing outside of the carrier bearing races. A simple, yet ingenious solution to the problem of achieving necessary preload and proper backlash with axles that use an external carrier shim design)

My friend blew up the spider gears in his 7.5...

He was asking for it though... He was in 4 Low, with a 4.0, on dry pavement and he dumped the clutch... not the smartest thing to do...
