Just realized I'm going to be hitting a HUGE snag in my project in t-minus.... 3 days.

my 91 2.9 4x4 parts ranger has a bad trans, and my plan was to take the good trans from my friends spare 89 2.9 2wd this thursday, convert it to 4wd, and toss that drivetrain into my 89 ranger.

i screwed up. i thought the shitsubishi trannnys were only used for the first few years of the ranger, and everything else was M5OD-R1. well apparently, i have an fm146 in this 91? and the 89 im getting the trans from is M5R1?

an m5r1 and an m5od are 2 diffrent trannys, my 2.3 has the m5r1 the 2.9's and 4.0's have the m5od's

m5r1 is just short for m5od-r1, theyre the same

i know. now i gotta decide if im gonna throw the 2wd trans in there and use it that way till i get the stuff i need from another m5 to hook up my transfer case, or make a last minute 3 hour each way run to the junkyard and try to get what i need before i take this parts ranger apart.

Ugh. The 2wd option sucks 'cause you have to tear out the Tcase...
And driving 6 hours is not much nicer. Not a nice choice to pick between...

I guess it depends on which is more important right now Your time or the truck. 4x4/the job done is nice, but so is not spending 6 hours driving to/fro the JY.

Doing the 2wd option would mean spending more than that 6 hours later though, changing it all back probably...?

thats EXACTLY what i was thinking. im just gonna stop whining and go ahead and get a 4.0 4x4 m5r1. on the bright side, ill be able to do my 4.0 clutch swap a litte earlier than planned. does anyone know if the slave cylinders are the same between an fm and an m5?
