have an 88 with an FM146. ate 2 gears, cluster and input (I think). Can't find any info on how to tear the tranny down and replace the gears. everything else inside the tranny looks good, possible rebuild in the past. Anyone know where to find out how to tear one down? if not, will an M5od R1 from a later model ranger/ explorer 4.0 bolt up to a 2.9? would I have to switch the transfer case or is it direct fit?

2.9L & 4.0L transmissions are physically interchangeable, so I would definitely say go for the M5OD.

(not with swapping between a FM146 & M5OD anyway)
