Have an 88 ranger with an FM146 that decided to smooth over 2 gears. I can't find any sources that can tell me how to diassemble it and replace the gears...HELP! everything else inside looks good

Disassembling an FM146 is like disassembling one of those wooden chinese puzzles.
(Only it's a japanese puzzle made of aluminum and steel.)

everything must be done in an exact and precise order

Then because you don't have the special dummy bearings to check end play and such you get to take it apart and put it back together (often several times)

Parts are not easily available, and when they are they are pricey.

Generally speaking it's often easier to switch to the OTHER transmission used in Rangers from 88-on, The Mazda M5OD-R1.

is the M5OD R1 from later model 4.o rangers and explorers a direct bolt up to a 2.9 and what about the transfer case?

The 90 to 2000 4.0 M5od will pop right in the middle and work with very few modifications to the truck.

I had to custom make a floor plate and the shifter will sit really close to the front of the hole. If you search the tech submissions there are detailed instructions with lots of pretty pictures (ok, maybe not pretty, but they are in color) on how to do it.
