will the Mitsu fm146 trans from an '88 ranger 4x4 work with a '91 explorer 4.0 engine?

don't think so. different bell housing pattern.

It will fit, but the trans wont take the torque. I also believe it will require driveshaft modification.

No, go to the junkyard and get a M5OD for a 4.0L ....its more reliable than any other tranny that will fit.

wait till the A4LD dies, probly not to long. then swap for a junkyard M5OD
