Hi, I'm working on installing a 5 speed manual in my 87 BII--trans and all the stuff underneath is almost done except for a couple wires. I took the complete pedal assembly out of a BII in the junk yard and it was a bear to remove--had to basically remove the dash to do it.

I was hoping I could just change shafts on the pedal carrier in mine and avoid all that disassembly, but the carrier for the pedals is too narrow for the shaft with clutch and brake pedal on it. Anyone have any workarounds to make this job easier?

I am looking at doing a AL4D to M5OD-r1 swap on my 86 BII and have been wondering the same thing myself...

im thinking about doing the same thing with my bronco too.

I have only removed a set of pedals, and never installed them, but it did not look like there was an easier way to do it. You're right, it is definitely not an easy task.

okay, it looks like I get to do it the hard way. I'll try and take photos to document what you have to do to remove the dash and install a clutch/brake pedal assembly. Will probably start tomorrow AM after a trip to the JY for some odds and ends.

I have replaced many pedal assembly on cars, many. But I have never had the chance to do it on a Ranger. So I cannot lend any actual advise. But . . I have read before where people just switched the pedals on Rangers, did not have to swap the entire assembly. However, if you must . . those upper two bolts can be gotten to without removing the dash. You CAN get them :)

what two upper bolts are you talking about. You only need to remove a little c-clip at the end of the shaft that the panel is attached to.

It is a pain if you do not take the e-brake braket off. It is possible sometimes like on mine but on my friends 86 I had no other option than to take it off. After you take the bracket off, It will slide right in.

Okay, here's the problem. My 1987 BII had an auto trans and I put in the FM146. The pedal assembly I took from the JY is from a 1989 BII. See the photo below:

The pedals on the left are form a 1987. The assembly on the right is from the 1989. Notice how much wider the carrier is and the shaft for the brake pedal is also much wider. By using the 1987 parts, you can simply remove the circlip on the shaft and slide the shaft towards the driver's door--and with some effort get it out. There is not enough room to do this with the 1989 assembly and the carrier has different mounting points than the 87, so it won't work.
So, for anyone with a 1987, or similar, the swap is pretty easy.
Hope that helps.

I also found that the plug for the clutch cut out does not exist on the 1987--at least not like the multi pin plug on the 1989. This means there is no slot cut in the firewall for the connector on the 89 clutch master cylinder to fit through. I cut a slot with my cutoff tool and cleaned it up with some files.

That's as far as I got today--gonna go hunt some hogs tonight.
