so i was working on the 87 an noticed i have a lot of slop in my shiftier is that normal

One of two things has happened: the shifter housing is loose (bolts have backed out) or the round plastic piece broke off the end of the shifter. Both very common things.

How much slop? All M/Ts have some play depending on the model. Is the top plate for the shifter tight?

the top plate was loose when i got it i tightend it up but it didnt help much maybe i can get kit to fix it when i pull the shiftier out to do the flywheel repair the truck has 250k miles on it so that might say something

Pull the shifter housing off and see if the plastic ball is there. If not, you can try to find something about the same size and replace it... maybe a ball bearing, a hard plastic marble, etc... second option is to find a junkyard shifter, 3rd option is a Hurst shifter ($$$) or just live with it but it's kinda hard on the trans to leave it because you run the risk of not fully engaging a gear.
