My flywheel ring gear is toast. I am redoing everything that came out and all seals as well. I can get an OEM flywheel for between 50 and 80 dollars. I know I can get a ring gear for less than 20 dollars. I am not sure how much the labor for the ring gear install and surfacing the flywheel will cost. Is their any advantage to repairing the old one.

I can only give you info on what it would cost in my area. Resurface runs $30, Install new ring gear runs $25 plus you will probably need a flywheel shim after surfacing$10. I would go new if it was mine. Good luck.

Does the end play need to bet checked for a new flywheel

No, the flywheel doesn't affect end play. End play is basically the measurement of the clearance between the crank and thrust bearing.

I have built several motors that end play was measured on the flywheel. You had to put shims between the flywheel and the crank.
