I have an 88 Ranger 2.9 4x4. What type of fluid does the trans and transfer take? Its the "145" transmission. I thought 80/90 gear lube but when I double checked at the Advance Auto counter their computer says Mercon Automatic trans fluid. If thats what it takes, what type of Mercon should I get?

What goes into the transfer case?

When I dropped the trans to replace the clutch, the fluid was a heavy brown color. How do I drain all the old fluid out to replace it with new? Can I drop that pan on the bottom? The one with all the bolts.

ONLY the M5OD transmission uses ATF. All other Ranger manual transmissions use gear oil. The transfer case uses ATF.
