-Fluctuating idle strength. Several times, it has gotten so weak that the engine died or almost died.
-Poor acceleration, sometimes.
The shop told me the camshaft sensor was sending a code (they did not tell me what code) and the timing belt needed replacing because it was starting to crack. Repair would be expensive so I decided to do it myself.
I did my research, dug in, and looked at the timing belt and gears. Everything is lined up correctly. Teeth on the timing belt are in very good condition. I wiggled the camshaft sensor just to see if that changed anything. I did not replace the timing belt (I ordered a new one and am waiting for it to arrive).
Long story short, I put the truck back together and at first the idle was somewhat high and fairly smooth, but after about five minutes of running and driving it went back to weak and fluctuating.
I'm thinking vacuum leak? There are a lot of really old hoses in there and some of them have obvious cracks. But I'm not familiar with the vacuum system or names of the hoses, so I have no idea where to start.
ETA - we used a propane torch (unlit) to check for vacuum leaks under the hood. Nothing.
Confirmed engine code: camshaft position sensor.
The trouble is, the camshaft position sensor is located in the most impossibly hard-to-reach place they could have put it. I'm not sure how to reach it. Even having taken some parts off to get to the timing belt earlier, I couldn't reach it. Repair manual simply says "remove bolts and detach sensor." Go figure.
