Flexplates, flywheels and geared starters

Hi all,
I've been working with my '74 2.8L engine in my kit build for a while and sent the starter out to be rebuilt. It's an oddball starter - I had ordered a rebuilt from the local FLAPS and the nosecone wasn't even the same (assumed that it was a stock MII starter). Anyway, upon getting the OE starter back from the rebuilder, it has been nothing but issues with apparent dead spots and mesh issues. The car is running an automatic - keep in mind this is a kit car and nothing is standard or taken for granted - the transaxle is an Audi unit, but I know the engine is a 2.8 from a MII in '74. At any rate, the ring gear on the flywheel has 135 teeth, the starter has 9. From what I've been finding is that the flywheel/flexplate is actually from a 2.0/2.3 Ford with that tooth count.
So, my question to you all is this: was there ever a 135T flywheel for the 2.8 (just making sure) and if so, is there is geared starter that might fit the motor? I'm looking at a geared starter for two reasons: removing some of the bulk when trying to fit the damn thing and ease of replacement should it be necessary. I'm also assuming that the starter would need to be a 10T pinion...

Any insights would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Rick
