What is the purpose of the flexplate that is between the engine and transmission ?

the spacer plate? to keep debris out.

the flexplate? a lightweight version of a flywheel used with automatic transmissions to connect the engine to the torque converter

Your flexplate is the flywheel in an automatic transmission equipped vehicle. It has the teeth your starter engages against, and your torque converter bolts to it if I recall correctly. We had to replace the one in our Countour because it was cracked where the bolts went thru.
