Flat spare tire mount for bed?

i haul too much stuff to mount mine flat so i did a little work to get mine vertical..

I have seen a few trucks around here doing this. It still looks great...but I love that dog more.....lol

she loves to hang out on the trails and go with me

If you would rather that it sits at an angle, more baja style...I took the spare tire carrier from underneath my Ranger and removed it from the underside...flipped it over on the top side and drilled a couple of holes...makes a perfect Baja tire mount clone in a pinch...It looks like the pictures directly above my post but has a better look to it and you still have room under it to get the most out of your bed space...I broke the lug bolt on my mount so I found a piece of ready-rod to fit good and just use a nut to hold it tight once it's slid down over the "hub" part of the mount...Good luck!

I forgot about this thread. Can I see some pics of that?

Darn, she is a beauty. Give her a hug and kiss on the nose for me, Bro!!!!

she's a sweetheart, does great on the trails i was really suprised

:icon_idea: now instead of drilling out the little rivets couldn't i just take that whole bar, and make a swing out tailgate/spare tire holder? i dont have cliff with me to look at right now but from what i remember it might be possible. will try once i get it back. if anyone has done it or IS going to do it let me know and show some pic's.

Its not a flat tire mount, but its an easy removable angled tire mount that I came up with. I welded two pieces of 1/2-13 threaded rod inside my bed at the rear of my wheel wells, I then place my Hi-Lift across them and use wing nuts to secure it down, lean my spare against it and use a strap to tie it in place. Has worked well for me for years. If you want to keep from having rods sticking up you could also weld a piece of 1/4" plate to top of each wheel well and drill and tap a hole in each to screw a rod into for the same effect.

Why would you wANNA mount a flat? you should find a good spare and mount htat, LOL j.k

Well, here's my spare tire mount:

Underside mount, 5/8" nut welded to 1" wide flat stock.

Topside of bed with no tire, only bolt heads take up space in bed.

Holddown bar. 5/8" threaded rod (on left) with 1/2" ID black plumbing pipe cut at angle and welded to rod with fresh coat of flat black paint (don't worry, I wiped up the overspray). Rod is about 11" long and pipe is about 9" long

As mounted. This picture doesn't show the holddown painted yet. I might get some plastic to coat the area where the holddown makes contact with the wheel so it doesn't damage my aluminum wheel when I get it on there. The rod sticks down plenty far underneath, about 6". I guess that leaves room for growth when I get huge tires! But, I might cut it down some, it takes forever to screw it down (good thing you don't use spare tires very often!).

Total investment, about $8: $5 threaded rod, $3 black pipe, the rest was stuff laying around the garage.

Make a really big washer out of some flat steel and put that in between the Y section and the wheel.

That's not a bad idea, thanks for the suggestion. Although, I would probably buy one instead, I don't have a lot of faith in my ability to cut something out that's supposed to be round. :D
