Flashpaq - 1996 3.0

Are you looking into programmers? I know Jet makes a programmer and a module that just plugs in to the diagnostic port on your truck. Your best bet, imo, is to go with a superchips programmer.

Yea well i did some research in this forum and I read the Jet module was not worth it. It was basically a standardized setup which you are plugging in to an engine that could be way different from the one they set the programs to. So by now I would think the programmer would be beneficial. I have used the Superchips micromodule on a 04 F150 and it is so easy and it improved performance.

Like I noted before...

Get in contact with a local shop that will be willing to tune your car. See if they use SCT or Diablo tuners. Buy one. Have the shop put a custom tune on the programmer. Another tune on the programmer will be the factory tune in case you have to take it to the dealership.

Another way is a can tune. Which instead of a dyno tune(put your car on a dyno and tune it with many many pulls), a can tune is something a tuner creates by pluging in data to a series of calculators and comes up with the best tune possible without having the car present. The downside is every car is different. So the tune won't be as great. A good place for a can tune is bamachips.

The jet chip in kind of like a can tune, but has no room for expansion with future mods.

So I get the one they use/ suggest and have them program it for me? And I totally understand the can tune and dont feel like going that route.

Yes a tuner will prefer and provide more than the other. You will be looking in the ball park of $600, but understand that this is the best mod for any car! If you want to start slow, you can buy a handheld on your own, change a few factory things(using the handheld software) and when you come up with more money get a tune for around $350, but it is cheaper to do everything at once as a tuner with discount.

I was recently at Stack Performance. They are a great shop. Although they specailize in SRT vehicles, they had several other cars in there. They are close to you and I suggest you give them a call.

Thanks alot for the info. Im still gonna keep my options open but I think I will eventually go the tuner route with a shop custom tune when I have the money. Just need to find out which programmer. I saw on the Superchips site that the Flashpaq is made for the 3.0, but not for an older model like my 1996. Will it work?
