My credo
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.
I really don't want to spend $2500 rebuiilding my transmission. If I replace the defective part that' is bad (* Torque Converter Seal) the cost would be around $1k. The truck has 138k miles on it. And there's no issue with the transmission at all, except the heavy leak now. What would you guys do,,,, spring for $2500 or $1000?

I would get some friends and a floor jack and pull the transmission out myself and change the seal.

Would you rebuild the transmission if it's fine, and just the torque converter leak?

Do transmissions if driven normally, last a long time on an older Ranger like mine. My next question.

Guessing the one in your truck is 30 years old, Not sure what your definition a long time is, but 30 years is pretty close to it.

If that transmission hasn't been beat on, it's not even at its mid-life crisis yet.

I found a mechanic that's replacing all the seals, gaskets and filter for $800.

It hasn't been beat on. It's a Pennsylvania title, and I'm the 2nd owner.

There you go. If you don't think you can do it yourself. I think you will be ok if he guarantee's his work. Don't pay him to replace the transmission seals. Tell him I am paying you to fix the transmission leaks. If it still leaks, he needs to fix it again.

I got my Ranger back yeaterday, no leaks and it's running excellent so far.
