Long story short bought a 92 ranger xlt about 2 months ago for 900.00. Put roughly 900.00 into it for all nee brakes drums and lines.

Then it started overheating. Cause is determined to be exhaust gas escaping combustion chamber and bubbling into coolant system creating an air pocket and allowing engine to overheat. So i am now in process of doing a teardown to replace head gasket and other gaskets along the way.

Well exhaust manifolds were way too tight to get off so i had to cut the exhaust so i can pull the heads with the exhaust manifolds attached. One of the previous owners thought it cool to weld the exhaust pipe right to the manifold.

Anyway, got that done and now i am removing valve covers

It's always a little unnerving tackling a job like this. Next time I suggest pressure washing the engine first.
Good luck.

I don't envy you doing this out doors. Hopefully after it's running you'll be able to drive it with few problems and know what you've got.

Looks like the previous owner(s) did not like preventative maintenance.

They didn't. This is my first job like this on any vehicle but i did my research and have been working on it since Monday. I am pretty confident i can get it all cleaned and put back before Sunday night haha.
I pray there aren't any more problems. Im ready to just drive it lol

My first attempt at an engine rebuild was done on a 77 Honda Accord. Needed pistons and rebore. I dismantled the entire engine with the help of a Haynes manual, just followed it step by step.

Back together I gave it a start and it fired on second revolution and ran smooth.

Hope the same for you.

Thank you i hope so. I also have my trusty haynes manual by my side. The heads are cast iron so i am hoping no machining in the future.

Well job has been put on hold while a machine shop removed the busted spark plug. It coincides with the right front cylinder leading me to believe that the headgasket has been an issue for some time in order to seize it in place with rust.
