I have saw plenty of write ups swapping a explorer 8.8 with disk brakes into later model rangers.Has anyone swapped one into a first gen ranger?I am just wondering if I need to change the master cylinder or change the distributing block? Its going into a 86 ranger.

Changed over just fine to my 88. Nothing was changed during the swap.

It should work. But, expo disc brake rears are about 3 inches wider than the factory rear in square body Rangers, so be prepared for added width.
If you don't want a significantly wider rear axle, you could also do a Mustang rear disc swap with your current rear axle, and not change the track width at all. You'd have more options for rotors, pads, and calipers too.

A non issue because the front axle is about an inch wider per side than the stock rear. And now that I have pointed it out, it will bug you (it bugs me)

I'll be doing the Explorer Disk 8.8 into my 86, I"ll let you know how it goes when I get to that point. Granted you'll probably beat me to it cause it could be next year before I'm at that point. Being a 4x4 (assuming you're referring to the shadow) I really wouldn't worry about the added width to much, If you were lowered like I'm soon to be it might be more of a issue.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but another possible option for a disk swap axle would be the later Rangers. They've been coming 4 wheel disk for the last few years. That would be a bolt in swap I think and be a little closer to the original width.

I think the Ranger got disk brakes in '10, so there won't be a ton of selection out there.

Only 1/2" difference side to side from a newer Ranger axle (they didn't change the front width) You won't notice it.

Just throwing it out there as another option.
