firewall cracked around master cylinder

I thought my clutch was going out, truck was hard to get into gear, but found out the firewall is actually cracked (3 in. or so) around the clutch master cylinder and when I would push the clutch in, the whole m.c. was moving. Temporarily put a bolt and wide washer through to hold it and it shifts like a dream now, but I need a more permanent fix. Has anyone ever had this happen? I've never heard of a firewall doing this.

My old 92 did the same thing. What I did was put a port-a-power bottle jack type deal from the radiator support to the crack and jacked it til the crack was flush and welded it from under the dash. Never had a problem after that.

Protip- have a cup of water ready, carpet is very flammable

i would over panel and weld it.


if that is not an option i would over panel and bolt and glue it.


stop drill the cracks though whether you weld or bolt it.

Thanks for the help, think I'll try welding the crack first, might be easier, I'm so glad I found this site, it's helped me out many times

Protip- have a cup of water ready, carpet is very flammable

Remove the seat and pull up the carpet. Still i would keep a cup of water near bye, better to cover your a$$ then watch it go up in smoke.

Quite a commom issue due to the desgin of the firewall. It wasnt corrected until 95.
