well my truck caught fire tonight not only once but four times on the way home and now it wont start, looks like im in for a 4.0 swap and wont be doing any hunting this year cause its gonna cost me 2k to get a new 4.0. i dont know how to how to do electrical that well but i will atempt it and hope i dont ruin it. :bawling:

Ouch that's not good. Why spend 2,000 go find one in a tow yard that's been wrecked! You'll have all the stuff you'll need or close to it

cause if i find on in a wrecking yard i dont know if it runs good nor whats wrong with it, if i could find one from a member on here that lives in washington i would rather do that cause it would be way cheaper. but right now my truck cant be moved cause everytime it starts up and runs for 3 mins it catches on fire.

You can save a lot of money by rebuilding a junkyard motor. MOST of the time they're not bad, but with a little time, can be made to be damn near bullet-proof for what you need. (I meant bullet-proof as in reliable and not leaky.)

Also, why was your pickup catching fire? Did you use the wrong fuse somewhere? Or have a loose connection?

If it's something like either one of those, fix those wires that are affected and go about almost as if nothing ever happened...

id be more worried about why its catching on fire than swapping a motor out... what exactly is lighting on fire? electrical or oil leaking all over the manifold?

If you get a motor from a wrecked ranger (something hit from the sides or behind..) you can look at it this way: it was running before it was hit, more than likely it will still run. Insane has it nailed, pull a junkyard motor and you can redo all of the gaskets while it is out and check the bearings and oil pickup as well. couple of hundred for the 4.0 and harness, another couple of hundred in gaskets, new water pump and other miscellaneous items, you are good to go.

I always look for the truck that was driven into something, you know that it was a running, driving vehicle.

I bought the 2.9 that's currently in my choptop like that. Junkyard got an 87/88 BII in that took a pine tree to the middle of the grill. Engine looked fine and the crank spun freely so I figured that it must have been running pretty good when they smashed into the tree. Cracked the bellhousing and smashed the dizzy against the firewall, but.... Yanked it out and dropped it in my choptop. Took a little playing around with it since it didn't want to start right away (had fuel, spark and good compression but for some reason or another it wouldn't fire till I jump-started it, been fine ever since). I paid $200 and a junk axle I had to the junkyard (they were just going to crush it rather than leave it sit in the yard) and got to pull not only the motor but anything I wanted off it. So I took the entire drivetrain, hatch, back windows, doors, the one good front fender and a few other odds and ends. Everyone was happy with the deal - the junkyard got more than they would have just crushing it and turning it in for scrap and I got a pile of parts.

A++++++ on this, Bro. Why? Gas fire from a leak...electrical.....could burn up your home if you park in the garage or real close to the house or an apartment building. Find out why the fire happened!!! ASAP.

I'm more intrigued by what's making it catch on fire. Sounds like the truck is still running so why swap a motor?

Is this your 84? Is it the carb leaking gas or something? Open the hood, grab a chair and turn it on...Look for fireworks (with an extinguisher of course, lol)

I'm kidding...... Check around for leaks or bad wiring grounding out somewhere. Something is going on in there.

Agree with most said above. Don't jump to a conclusion that you need a new motor. Even if you did, don't spend 2k on a 4.0. Hell, do the damn V8 swap if you're gonna spend 2k.

Find the problem. Fix the problem. If problem can't be fixed, get a junkyard motor or spend 2k in a good way.

I'm all for a 4.0 swap, but I'd wanna know why you are catching fire.

Plus for 2000, I could find you a running donor and probably get you a D35. Then you could swap dashes and everything. Be done in a few weekends.

Automatic transmissions are crap in Ranger/Xploders. I've bought a few Xploder's with blown tranny's for free-$500 running! people don't want to spend $3500 on a new tranny for their 20 year old rig and sometimes just want it out of their driveway. Dash, wiring harness',engine, tcase and diffs will bolt into your B2. Then grab a 5 speed and flywheel from a wrecker. This is what I did with my old 2.9ltr/FM146/BW1350/7.5" rear diffed Ranger. OBD1 fuel injection is awesome for wheelin. I carry atleast 1 of every sensor I need in 1 tobacco can and a spare computer the size of a external hard drive - Done!Carbs CAN be sketchy on cutlines and washouts. I've seen 2 carbed trucks stall out and freewheel backwards down a mountain.

This.

Or for 2 grand, you can find a pretty decent little 4.0 Ranger. Then you don't have to worry about the fire anymore, or the electrical..... or the swap.

Yep......
take that $2,0000......
go buy a $20 vehicle fire extinguisher....
find the source of fire....
take LOTS of pics of thr problem-area.....
we will help identify the problem/solution
spend another $100 fixing it......
go hunting this year....

that is all.....
