Hey guys, I'm just about finished swapping a 4.0 from a 92' Ranger into my '88 Ranger, and keeping the original dash. Since the wiring part of this seems to be something most people have trouble with and is pretty under documented, I plan on doing a thorough write up of the wiring as well as draw up some diagrams to help people along. But first I have a few questions so tie up some lose ends:

1) My truck fires up and idles well, but seems to be running rich and when I give it the slightest bit of gas the RPM's drop immediately, and it dies when I give it any more. The TPS is new and I checked the MAF by unplugging it to put it into limp mode, but still stalled with any gas so I think it's something else.

2) Coming through the firewall in the engine bay on the drivers side, there's a 2 pin connector with two blue/black wires. I'm 90% sure they go to the transfer case, but can anyone confirm this or know what they do? They were unhooked when I got the truck.

Thank you!

recheck your grounds carefully. the 4.0 is a bit more sensitive, especially with the edis circuit.

the two systems known by us ranger pigs as gen 1 and gen 2 and 3... as far as the dash boards are concerned are totally different. so making the donor engines from later years standalone is the best option, and interface whatever you want to use from there...gauges/idiotlights/cel etc... not worth the effort for most to document obviously....that and the 4.0 systems are changine constantly throughout the year and getting 2 identical to the tee setups is not exactly guaranteed in my experience.

ac can be a pia though and cruise control can be a kick in the ass when trying to use the latest systems or other brand powertrains. i usually just go with the electric gm style with a speed sensor signal stolen from somewhere for cruise control....ugly turn signal stalk but i like having cruise control.
