95 XLT with the 2.3 and auto trannie.
I made the mistake of buying a "factory rebuilt" trannie from aamco. Paid extra for a 3 year warrenty. 4 months later they replaced it. A year after that they replaced it again. The day before the 3 years was up, the truck was towed to aamco who said they would not fix it because my speedo didn't work. (I read the small print; 1 year/30,000 mile warrenty, speedo must work. Oh, and nowhere did it mention the 2nd and 3rd years of warrenty. Wish I'd read the small print 3 years earlier).
So for over a year the trans has been shifting hard, banging between gears. Finally I decided I would put some Transmission Medic in it.
Had to drop the pan to get fluid out. (my first few cars had drain plugs on the trans pan and the gas tank, too!) New gasket, trans medic, top it off with the fluid I had just drained. Flared between gears a bit but moved. No OD. 2nd day it flared more and no reverse when I got to work. It needed fluid (no leaks). That got me a very weak reverse back but still no OD. Today it went 1st, flare into 3rd, then 4th. No reverse when I got to work. Same for the trip home (45 miles) Forgot and pulled front end into driveway. No reverse to get out of the drive.
So for $2600 I got roughly 4 years of driving but needed 3 transmissions to do it and was without a truck 2 weeks each time I took it to aamco
Already have a back-up 96 ranger so this weekend I fiddle with that (Damn, 6 months ago I swapped the interiors, now I got to swap back). The 95 will either get a standard or get junked, undecided.
The lesson from all this is; Don't buy aamco or their corporate entity, global power systems.
