I am going to look at a 91 Explorer 4.0 automatic tomorrow.
My current truck is an 87 Ranger 2.9 5 speed
My questions are:
1)With basically a stock swap and daily driving do you think my 5 speed will hold up to the 4.0?

2)Will I need to find a 5 speed ECM or will the auto one work ok?

3)I will need a 4.0 flywheel and clutch? Anything else?

4) I have read some swap info that says the stock exhaust bolted up and others say you need the 4.0 exhaust. Which is true?
Thanks in advance guys. I have researched some but I need this info pretty quick so I can decide if I want to buy it tomorrow.

ideally you would get a 5 speed pcm.

but, for normal driving if your trans is ok or fresh you will get by.

i use the 4.0 y usually...but the 2.9 shit worked too.

theres many potentials...calibrations vary

but it will run

So should I use the auto ecm or will I have issues?
What other parts will I need to buy to mate my tranny to the 4.0?

not sure.

one way is to put the nss in neutral/park mode

4.0 fly clutch like mentioned earlier

reman ecm usually a 100 or so

putting a manual ecm into a auto trans harness can damage it depending on how its setup.

i usually just make the 91 type stand alone and live with the codes
