Recently, the low & medium settings on my heater stopped working. Instead, only high and "super high" work. What could cause this and how do I fix it?

That is part of it...that is the pigtail wire harness which I am going to the dealership to pick up cause advanced has to order that one...but the other part which is actually the resistor. The resister corrodes and rusts and the pigtail harness that you've shown above melts to the resistor. So typically both are needed to be replaced. Have to cut and resplice the factory wiring into that new harness you've shown. Use some dielectric grease before reassembling to help prevent corrosion in the future.
This is the actual resistor:

Hope that helps...

That does help, thanks.

Except that one does not fit my vehicle so I think I need this one:

which is in stock, but the pigtail harness is not.

By the way, where is this resistor? Is there a bunch of stuff in the way to get to it?

Yeah they do look a little different between our year trucks...mine is a 97...but yeah the pigtail I am picking up from my local ford dealership this evening for 27 bucks. Just remove the passengers side inner fender and you will see it right in the front of the heater box...you can get to it from the top too, but much easier to see from below. Mine took an 8mm socket and took two screws out of the heater box and out it came....but took me a while to finally get it to break apart and that's when i noticed the prongs inside the resistor had broken/rusted off inside of the pigtail wire end. It is located just below the fan motor back at the firewall on passengers side.

I recently did the job on my 2002 Ranger Edge. Ford has a pretty good parts lookup on their web site. You just put your VIN in and it gives you all the parts for that vehicle.
I made sure they had the resistor in stock at my local Ford dealer, and started the removal. I went from the top and it was a slow process for 2 small bolts. I managed to get the resistor out, and the resistor and connector would not come appart. I sprayed it with some pb Blast, and gave it a good yank. The connector crumbled in my hand. Of the 4 connections 3 were still attached and the whole interior looked burned, and melted.
I popped over to the dealer and picked up both pieces. In Canada we don't have a lot of aftermaket parts guys so I paid the price. 50 for the Resistor and the Ford dealer actually had an aftermarket connector for 19 dollars. The connector was by Atlas PA7267, and the resistor was a Motorcraft YH-1700 4L5Z-19A706-AA. That was for a 2002. The Atlas part came with a ton of wire, so I cut the wires and used those wire connectors you push the wire in and crimp. Works like a charm now.
OH and all of the tips I received from this site made it a lot easier.

I actually only got to this today. The install was very straightforward. I found it much roomier from above, however. Perhaps it is because I don't have A/C or perhaps it is because the design changed from Gen II to Gen III. The bolts were indeed 8mm.

Here are some pics of the install:

I can now enjoy all of my blower fan settings. :)
