it does it in ac and heat. my dads focus has the same problem. the heat or ac can be on but the fan will only work on the highest power. any suggestions? dad put a new switch in his and it didn't fix it. i may have another gage cluster layin around i'm gonna try but i thought i'd ask to see if anybody knows on here before i try it.
thanx guys

In both cases....its the blower motor resistor. Check to see if the wiring connector at it is melted as well...they commonly do.

as SR stated the resister..it is bolted to the bottom of the fan blower housing in the engine compartment

my 88 Ranger had the same problem the resistor was rusted in two or three.

This thread has been a great help. I had the same issue and had assumed it was the fan switch. When that failed to give me back the lower speeds I searched the forum. Good stuff.
Question. I can't seem to find the ballast resister on my 85 ranger. Do you have to remove the fan to see it?

Found it. Getting it out is a PITA but is much easier when the air box is out of the way.
This is what I found in it

I cleaned the leaves and pine needles out and the fan works now and blows pretty good but there is no heat:dunno:

The hose going to the core is plenty hot but cold coming out. Blocked core?

It definitely sounds that way. I'm amazed that didn't catch on fire!:icon_surprised:

yep, your lucky that your truck didn't burn up, those little coils get hot.

posted with a western star mag and a 11lr/22.5 tire.

Pull the hoses off the engine also and see if the barbed nipples are clear also the one on the upper thermostat housing was plugged on mine just allowing the hose to get hot but the heater core would only blow lukewarm air. and the water was cold coming out back to the water pump.

Ok. Checked barbed ends from water pump and t-stat cover. Both are clear. I ran fresh water thru the hose that was cold and it ran clear (eventually) thru the other hose but still no heat. The hose that goes from the T-Stat housing to the heater gets warm but the hose from the core to the T fitting (that feeds the intake manifold) is cold.
Question. Where is the valve that that controls the water to the core? Or does water always circulate thru the heater core? I know I am missing the metal pipe that runs along the top of the engine could that be part of the issue?
This is for a 1985 w/the 2.3 FI.
Thanks,
Jim

It is probably just a air lock what I found works good is put a coolant flush tee in the hose that goes to the thermostat housing remove the radiator cap and while the engine is running pour water into the tee until coolant runs out the radiator and quickly cap off the tee. That fills the upper engine and the heater core at the same time and allows coolant to circulate thru the heater core.

You can get one at any part store.

Replaced the core and all is well. Lots of heat but the fan is a little weak.
Thanks everyone who replied
