Fan control knob all messed up

I have a 1993 ford ranger. The fan control knob when turning correctly will not push in for AC. So you have to rotate it out of its notches to be able to push in for AC. But when you take it out of AC mode it just spins so it doesn't control the fan like it should. Any suggestions?
