Ok. Have a 94 XLT. Stock head unit says Dolby System on the tape deck lid. I'm trying to figure out if i replace this head unit with an aftermarket one if i have a factory amp, where it's at, and what i need to do to bypass it if i need to bypass it. I had a 97 XLT and the amp was right behind the seat however i didn't need to bypass anything. Just got the metra harnesses and wired things up without any issues. So any input on this would be appreciated. I figured i would ask before i went searching the truck on a wild goose chase for an amp that isn't there.

If you pull out the radio you could tell from the wiring if it has regular or premium sound system(extra amp).
'94 wiring diagrams for both are here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/radio_wiring_diagrams.shtml

Dolby and Tape player would seem like Premium to me, but don't know where the amp might be, best guess would be passenger kick panel, high up
