Just a quick question;

Will a 7.3 diesel be a direct swap from a 6.0 Diesel?

I have a 2004 HD pick-up with a bad engine. Bought it new and the hardest it ever has worked is going over a curb and then I would go into 4-w low to do that. Drove in to town one day and it started to smoke badley (rich) and a wierd smell (stink). Took it in to the dealer and I was told an injector went and perforated the piston ruining the engine. Instead of replacing the engine with a 6.0 I wondered if it would be possible to upgrade to a 7.3.

Thanks for all your help.

I think you oughta swap a 5.9 cummins in there... but that's just me....

no, very different engines.

I've heard many good things about the 6.0. I would stick with that if I were you. Probably much cheaper to just replace, then to change everything over. It's not as easy as just plopping in a 7.3 with modified motor mounts. Wish you the best of luck

6.0's can be darn good engines and mod for mod will rip a 7.3 inside out.

I have heard of creampuff 6.0's turbos getting gunked up, overboosting and blowing out the headgaskets though. Diesels ain't made to putt.

Diesels have a specific application. They are designed to run long periods of time, and work hard. If you run a diesel like a gas engine, it's not going to last very long. Keep a 6.0 in it, and run her hard. Great power plants if you ask me.

Unless you get a nearly free mint complete donor truck I can almost guarentee it will be cheaper to repair the 6.0L then swap a 7.3L. Here's my thoughts, a few to choose from in order I'd do them:

-Build a bitch'n 6.0L shortblock, head studs, fire rings, lower comp. pistons, balanced rotating assembly etc and swap all other parts from your current 6.0L

Swap a cummins, reliable simple power.....change oil and filters...never touch it again after taking care of the KDP

-Find cheap rebuilt 6.0L to swap in

if you get the 6.0 first thing to change is the egr cooler and injectors.....those are the 2 big issues with the 6.0's then after that mod the motor and it will go haha a buddy of mine has a 6.0 and it does 0-60 in high 5 seconds or low 6 seconds............the 7.3 though is the most reliable engine out and any engine builder will say the same thing they are a great motor but they arent ment for performance they are more for towing...

That right there is your problem.

You don't use that engine right. If you want to keep the truck, and don't want to blow up another engine, but do want to keep babying it, swap in a 5.4L.

If you don't want to do to gas, put another 6.0 in, build it up, make sure you get the teflon coated turbo, and then beat it like a red-headed step child.

I was told this same thing by another 6.0 owner who had his engine go ka-put... the Ford dealership told him that the 6.0 was an engine that had to be ran hard...
