before you say anything, i posted in this section, because i am 99% sure the diff is an 8.8 which is the same diff as the ranger... and this section's discription said d28 d35 7.5 & 8.8

while i was talking to my dad, he was talking about his truck having some problems, it's a 96 f-150 reg cab long box 4x2 manual trans 5L with i believe 4.10's in it. He was saying that after backing out of the driveway, and turning left to leave (90* corner) he hears a loud bang coming from the rear end, he said that it sounds to him like a limited slip unloading, but that doesn't really make sense to me, as clutches typically slip smoothly... he also seems to think he's got a trac-loc in it, but i don't think he does... as far as i know, he's never done the fluid in it, and it's got about 250 000+ km on it... he is planning on selling the truck, but i figured it's an easy enough job to change the fluid that might take care of it... anyone had this problem or know what might be causing that bang?

Well it will either be a normal open differential or it could be the TracLock if its got a limited slip. And yes, it will have an 8.8 in it.

The 8.8's have a bad habbit of chewing up spider gears/side gears in the carrier. I'd pull the cover and see what the condition of them is. Rarely will a fluid change fix a noise like that, its usually related to something broken or binding up.

hmmm, any cheap ways to fix this to sell the truck?

Pull the cover...see what's needed. If the spiders are the problem, order a set of spider gears and install them. Reseal and fill with new gear oil.

agreed most likely a chewed up spider...find a junkyard and pull a good set
