Well, here's a new one..
I just bought a 2000 XLT 4.0 (OHV) a month and a half ago, and it has 108k miles on it now. I've fixed a couple things on it that needed fixing after 10 years, but there are no major mechanical issues with the car. Up until 3 days ago, the car always started perfectly.
(On a possibly unrelated note, I do notice one issue with starting. Sometimes it starts at a fairly low RPM, then the engine seems to "surge" to life and revs up to normal RPMs like it should. Probably happens a little less than half the time)
I digress- I went to start the car a few days ago and it would turn over and crank, but the RPMs would immediately drop and the car would stall. All the electronics worked fine in ACC, but I just couldn't get the thing to stay running. If I held down the gas, I could keep the RPMs around 1500, but as soon as I let off, it died. A friend of mine (who owns a 97 Taurus) came out to see what the problem is, had me pop the hood, and literally tapped three sensors on top of the engine (wish I remembered what they were..), closed the hood and it came to life twice in a row!
He said he had the exact same issue with his Taurus, and that literally tapping the sensors fixed it for a while, and it was likely an issue with the air/fuel mixture. I decided to have it towed to a local dealer, and it wouldn't start to get it on the truck, but once I got there (and ever since), it's started just fine.
Tonight was the first time the issue came back. I tried starting it 3 times to no avail, and magically on the 4th time (without hitting anything in the engine) it started. Started once more to get me back home and it's where I sit now.
The fuel pump doesn't make any odd noise when you hear it priming in ACC, and it drives perfectly when it starts and has never wanted to stall while driving. How do I check to see what's causing this issue, and how complicated would it be to fix?
(Also, this problem started the morning after I had another issue. Came down a mountain road only to find out I have a blown valve body gasket and lack any engine braking in manual 1st, had to ride the brakes down and they start smoking halfway down. Stopped the car to let them cool, and didn't have another problem...until the next morning. These couldn't be related, could they?)
Another point to note: There are no CELs coming on at all.
