I have a 2000 ranger with the 3.0 v6 engine and last year my rear end went out and a friend of mine gave me a explorer rear end with disc brakes. I swapped out the spring mounts and installed it and it works great except for the fact that the brakes are soft and the pedal is very close to the floor.
I am assuming this is due to the fact that the truck originally came with drum brakes on the back and now has disc brakes in the back.
Do I need to change the master cylinder? if so which one should I use?
Thanks for the help.
Dave

My brother and I are actually doing a full explorer rear end swap with discs right now.

Most people say they can get away with the ranger master cylinder.

There will probably be a difference in pedal feel with discs vs. drums but it shouldn't feel soft or go to the floor. Are you sure its bled properly?

Do you have ABS? If so does it work? You might need a proportioning valve if not

Try bleeding the system with a reverse bleeder or vacuum bleeder. Hopefully if you do have ABS there isn't air in the ABS unit but that is fixable as well if so

Sorry for saying the not so helpful "try bleeding it again" but its easy so not a bad place to start

I don't think a Ranger master cylinder could cause the soft pedal you're describing. Definitely sounds like an air pocket.
