I have never done the swap to an explorer 8.8 rear end before or any other rear end swap for that matter. I have a 96 4 x 4 Ranger and have already picked up an Explorer 8.8 from a local junk yard. I already know the normal stuff- have to get the spring perches welded on the opposite side, shock mounts welded, etc. What I am wondering about is in general what should I be looking to do as far as rebuilding the axle? I am going to be replacing the calipers and rotors and cleaning it up and painting it. Also the backing plates have seen better days, any suggestions other then replacement? Two of the three junkyards I used to go to here have closed down recently.

take the backing plates off. get a wire wheel bit and clean them up and paint. Might want to replace the bearings (definately the seals) while you have it out.

So bearings and seals, got it. what I meant about the backing plates is they are pretty bent up, I didn't realize it at first. Guess I will try to bend them back.

If it's just the tin parts that are bent, yeah, just straighten them out. Should be fine. If the caliper mount part is bent though, I'd replace that.
