explorer 8.8 gears in ranger 8.8 housing?

I have a donor X with 3L73. I'm trying to restore my 94 to 3.73 to match the front. I'm going to use the 4L10 rear (currently on 94) on my 02 and so I plan to rebuild the 4.10 (from the 02) to 3.73 for the 94. Not wanting to put money into converting the X axle for the ranger, so will the X 3L73 gears fit into the ranger rear end? Both are listed as 8.8 ring gears but I haven't found anything about whether the 31 spline X axles vs 28 Ranger have any effect.

You can swap the gears. All 8.8 ring and pinions are the same. The carrier will swap also (i think) but you would have to change swap the side and spider gears.

so swapping the gears alone = 3.73 but the carrier is the limited slip part (3L73)? How hard to swap the side and spider gears (The X axle is staying in but the Ranger axle has to come out anyways)?

gears will swap, carriers will swap as far as i know, the carrier bearings are the same between the 2 axles, so i think they do. but the side gears are for either a 31 spline axleshaft or a 28 spline shaft, that's why they need to be swapped. just remove the cross pin, c clips and the spiders will come out. very easy

But, you can not swap side/spiders from an open diff to a limited slip diff. So you would have to swap the r&p only.

oh i see what you're saying.

no, the EX spider gears from the LS wont swap into the ranger 8.8 diff.

but you can just remove the ring gears and swap them between the 2 different LS carriers

You HAVE to keep the ring gear and the pinion gear matched together. Do not miss match the two. Each set is matched otherwise they will fail.

Negative, the snout diameter on the side gears are different between the 28 and 31 spline axles.
