Experience w/ Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch?

N0 it did not. The one I used on my 240Z didn't have weights either. I just assumed weights were not required since I don't have over 250hp on either vehicle.

On another note, has anyone use a Zoom clutch? In particular, a Kevlar one? They caught my attention, but I don't know anyone who has had one.

I was kinda wondering about the Zoom Kevlar also.

Bob

Finally got the clutch job finished. So far the clutch seems to be GREAT. A much firmer grip.
I am in the middle of the break-in period. I used to get a lot of slippage in reverse going up hills. No prob now. Once the break-in is over, I plan to load her up, hook up the trailer and do some experiments. Should be a couple weeks, if I can get my trailer finished and nothing else blows up.
Of course will run her up to redline and do a powershift or 2 just to see what happens. Not while it is fully loaded, though. LOL

Is this the Zoom Kevlar or the Centerforce?

Just because the sheet metal cover for the pressure plate has "LuK" stamped on it doesn't mean it's "stock" remember the important part of the clutch pressure plate is the diaphram spring.

As the the weights, they help in some high rpm applications.

The point is that certain clutch designs have idosyncracies...

The "long" syle that was historically used on Ford performance engines gets progressively harder to release as rpm increases because there are weights
on the finger arms,

The diaphram style pressure plate unless specifically designed to avoid the problem is prone to "holding itself open" or actually releasing itself if spun fast enough...
This can have nasty consequences...

The Coil spring Borg&Beck style pressure plate avoids both of these problems,
but the design of the pressure plate takes up more room...
(they tend to be "Taller" off the flywheel)

I'm pretty sure that Luk will cheerfully sell anyone bare cover stampings
and inertia rings for another company to build clutches around...

Possibly even build the clutch to the aftermarket companies specifications...
After all the original clutch was built to ford's specifications...

i had a zoom kevlar(for 2.9l) dual friction and it engaged harshly.i run a stock type 4.0l clutch now

Wiz,
It's the Centerforce Dual Friction. If you read the rest of the thread you can see that my application was not exactly what I expected by the description given by Centerforce. But the proof is in the pudding, and so far I am liking this clutch. Didn't care for the price that much. LOL

Just above "Rick" said he had tried the Zoom Kevlar, and seems he didn't care for it that much.

I will report more findings as they happen.

Bob

P.S. "Rick", I gotta go along with the quote.

I have one experience with CF...... it was on my diesel, just in case any of you own a diesel, or have a friend with a diesel.... don't waste your time, mine was smoked (under normal driving!!!) not sled pulling, not slipping or racing.... some tire smoking but nothing crazy in 3k miles.

If you are hell bent on a single disk... run a Valair, if your want a Dual Disk, go ahead and dump the 2 grand and get a South Bend Dual disk.... I smoked out another 750 hp single after the CF (but I worked it, and it wasn't rated for my 1k lb trq) went to a 3800 SB DD, and It shifted slower than the single... but was as smooth as stock, and took every 45psi boosted 3rd gear launch I threw at it.

but I have heard good things about CF on gassers.....

Frank

And disclaimer- I do mean all diesels.... I'm a member of a diesel forum as well, and CF is a dirty word on there.

but I really have heard good things in all other applications.

Tank,

Thanks for the info. Very interesting. When I called the tech guy at CF, he seemed to bring up how they used disks similar to mine in the diesel apps. Now I know that maybe it's not as impressive as he made it sound. Of course, how ANYTHING handles the kind of torque that diesels put out is beyond me.

Thanks,

Bob

Break in time is over. I have made some redline shifts that were quite firm, even though my app does not have the finger weights. My old clutch would sometimes show the holding open and freewheeling phenomenon during redline shifts.
I noticed in reverse going uphill I used to have to slip it quite a bit, and that is gone too. Still have not done a test with a full load on the truck. I am going away next weekend to a motorcycle show, so won't be able to do any testing until I get back. I did notice a different type smell when I tested the clutch some. I am sure it is due to having a different type material on the clutch disk face.
Overall I am very satisfied with it at this point.

I had cf dual friction on my 91 2.3l with a hedman header and flowmaster 40 series and that beast would lay rubber three foot long in third gear!! No problems. Never slipped. I beat the snot out of that truck. Wish I still had it.

I'vegot over 12K miles on my CF DF and it's still working well. No slipage, chattering or any other problems. Miles ahead of the stocker.

They all feel "good" when they are new... Post back in about 10K miles.

If you didn't notice, I have over 12K miles on it. I have over 75K on the Centerforce Dual firction clutch with a modular steel flywheel on my 240Z Datsun. No problems and still works great.
