exhaust painting

does anyone know if high temp paint rated at 1000 degrees will stay on the exhaust or will it just peel off
 
I can't say i have that much knowledge on the subject but I think after a while all paint will start to peel, even the paint on my cherry bomb has started to peel in some places
 
Friend of mine did his exhaust manifold (small FWD car) and it did not peal off but turned from the bright red it was to a DEEP dark purple, and he followed the directions to the letter. However it still looks better then the rusted peace we started with.
 
use the VHT paint at your local auto shop. Follow the instructions to the letter and you will be happy!
 
One of the guys on the probe forum I do work with painted his exhaust manifold with extreme high temp paint.."Made for Exhaust" blah blah blah.

It started off as fire engine red....after the smoke cleared? He had a pretty PINK manifold.

The most important thing in any painting is the proper surface preparation. Most of the high temp paints on exhaust manifold don't last to many years in Winter salt conditions.

Another solution: Header wrap. You can get it in colors, it will last and you can probably do it easier than painting.

just make sure the dumb ass behind the counter doesn't sell you the wrong stuff that almost ignites :annoyed:
 
on my old yota the exhaust hung down past the frame and it was mud brown i got flame proof vht paint i think it was rated at 1500 and i got all the dried mud off the pipe and paint it black and it looked good and for about the next two or three months i had the truck it didnt peel or flake off
 
Quick and dirty way to keep exhaust looking good.

I've got almost 5 years on that exhaust in that pic. I was painting it every spring which was a real pain. I could use a repaint, but still looks reasonably nice, it's still better than it used to be with only one season on it.(seat was a temp just to ride it while building another, so no laughing!)

Install the exhaust, let it get a slight coat of rust, then brush it down and spray it with phosphoric acid rust conversion spray, (most auto parts have it)

Once it dries, you can either leave it 'as-is' or spray it with 1500 degree ceramic paint, which evens out the color a little better. Without painting it's a semi-gloss black (depends primarily on how smooth it was before spraying)

With those headers, I do have to touch up some stone chips right in front where the tire throws up rocks and dirt,but it's a ten minute job instead of a two day, tear off, sand, wash, dry, paint, re-install, so I'm happy

I painted the Gibson system on my Sport Trac before installation. The OE exhaust was only three months old and already covered in rust. I washed the muffler and pipe with Dawn and roughed them up with some sandpaper and painted them with silver VHT. Been over a year now and through one winter and it still looks like new.
