Had an exhaust leak all summer long that was getting worse so I was able to yank the manifold off today. Does anyone know why the holes in the manifold are much larger then the bolts that go through them? Expansion/contraction?

Cast iron expands huge amounts when heated. The heat range is in excess of 450 degrees. Larger holes allow that without breakage.

I noticed today that there is no gaskets either. I'll go with expansion/contraction as well.
