Getting ready to put the top end back together and want to replace the exhaust manifold bolts., along with the head bolts. My question is why are the thread ends of the bolts hollow? Can I replace them with solid bolts? This is the first time I've ran into hollow end bolts.

They're stronger. Having a hollow center makes them less likely to break off inside the head. But if you buy hardened bolts or studs you shouldn't have to worry about that.

thanks for the response , I kinda figured it had something to do with heat expansion. I'll buy hardened bolts and use anti seize, that should do it. I know that it was kind of a stupid question, but I still needed to figure something out.
