I recently did away with the wore out 68 302 motor in light of getting a fresh 302 with the Gt40p heads....there I have found an issue. I have a pile of manifolds, none of which will clear the plugs. I have searched high and low for Explorer manifolds but none have tuned up so far in the local yards. Are there any headers that will bolt and clear in my rig? My truck is a 2001 Ford Ranger 2wd (originally had a 2.5L) and I'm running the R2 transmission.

Torque monster headers are designed and made for the explorer heads, both gt 40 and gf 40p heads, but they are around 700 a pair...

I know the proper parts cost a little more sometimes but damn $700?! lol I was thinkin headers would be more around the 350 mark but if I have no other option they'll have to do. I priced stock explorer manifolds at the parts store and they're $59 (driver side) and $69 (passenger side) but I don't know how they flow and if they'll restrict my motor. I've heard tale that some stock parts don't hurt in a mildly built motor but I don't know. My engine along with the Gt40p heads has 9.5:1 compression pistons, an Edelbrock 650 carb, Weiand stealth dual plane intake, and Lunati cam(11001LK) specs are: 280/290 (intake Duration at 050 inch Lift 214, exhaust Duration 224) valve lift Lift int/exh: .472/.496. It's nothing crazy, just a build with parts I had laying around. Not even sure of the power to expect, maybe around 250 horses to the ground or so. I'm just trying to avoid a bottle neck that could turn in to a pain in the ass later.

The manifolds flow way better than the tubular stock headers...

You may have to experiment with several headers to find ones that'll clear the P heads. I just bought a set of Summit's shortys for a 95 F150 and they'll clear P head spark plugs. You might try the same shortys made for the 5.0 in the F150. No guarantee they'll fit the Ranger, but they should fit the heads.

I have always wondered to myself if a bit of work can be done to the stock manifold headers (cut, retube, reflow, etc...) and if anybody has done it to them?

If you compare the O.E. tubular manifolds to shorty headers, you'll see that the O.E. aren't worth the effort.

There are some spots that could be improved with little effort and I may try to do it.

baddad457, what was the part # on those headers you bought and do you have any pictures of them you could post? the only clearance issue I could foresee would be the steering shaft. I don't know how they are built and if they could be modified to clear that if it were to be a problem?

So you had a 302 in the truck before and now switched to the "P" heads. What manifold/header did you use before? The picking for the late models is very thin.

Go into Summit's website and look em up, they're Summit's "house brand" (made by Pacesetter) headers(95 F150 w/351W), they have pics on there. I can post some tomorrow with the engine in the truck, I should have gotten pics before I installed it sunday while it was on the engine stand. Oh, well. Not sure the 351 shortys will fit a 302 with the way the passenger side collector dumps, but I could tell by looking at em on the motor that they will clear P head's plugs fine. The shortys for a 302 F150 have a different passenger side header.

I got bored one day last winter and modified some stock mustang shortys. I ironed out the pinches at the mounting flange and rerouted a couple tubes to clear the sreering shaft. Realy more work than it's worth though.

Still have the 2.5 by chance. Need a crankshaft? Also the computer.

$785 a pair and worth every cents. I have a set on mine and love it. :D
