excessive end play

what causes rear axle end play. 98 explorer, limited slip 3.73 ratio i believe.

both axles move in and out alot.

I took the axles out and the c clips and axles dont look worn.
 
Probably normal. How did you conclude that an inspection was required? Toss a dial indicator on it and tell us what "a lot" is.
 
Well the rear end has alot of growling noise in the pumpkin area, gear lash is very minimal. End play is almost up to .25 . Since it has rear disc brakes would think that you wouldn't want any end play since that would cause the calipers to move alot.
