the grey-t escape

oh great one more thing to add to the endless list of problems from GM products. From my experince with chevys I'm not even suprised to see that anything that can go wrong does go wrong and anything thats impossible to go does go wrong. I'm still in awe as to why chevys owner will stand by and pick on other companys like Ford.

Yep seen that, kinda like flex plates do right before the end of their life. Good thing you caught it things get ugly quick when they fly.

ford fans just crack at the base of the blades and explode.

sounds to me like you're hating on gm.

all manufacturers have hits and misses

i guess its true that GM fanboys shove it down your throat "ZOMG CHEVY IS THE BEST THAT FORD BROKE HAHAHA LOLOLOLOL"

but thats because most chevy guys have no mechanical knowledge or skills and believe anything another chevy guy or sales brochure tells them "lol i only paid $5000 for this lift kit to get installed"

Nope, thats it in a nutshell, I always said if you say you like a GM product than you've never worked on one. Ive owned one my wife has owned one I ran my own auto repair buisness for two years had several return customers that were gm owners. They are full on money pits and no matter how many times you fix'em something else will go wrong it's endless, so
i'm not just hating.
i'm speaking from experience!

well im not saying GM products are quality.. cause i'd say 50% of my income comes from fixing GM products and Chrysler products.

im just saying they ALL design their cars and trucks to break down after the warrenty is up haha

and i can't say ford designs their cars mechanic friendly cause they sure aren't, just like any other manufacturer

I can agree all cars and trucks have there fair share of problems some just have more than others. If give the choice of picking performance and reliablity I think Ford wins. I'm not just bias either I love Mopar and GM muscle cars just don't want to half to work on it over and over and over and over and over just to do it all over again.

As said above, Ford fans do crack at the base. Which reminds me, that's on my list of things I need to buy.

Anyway, I thought I'd weigh in on my "working on a GM" experience. Have you ever replaced a radiator in a Cadillac STS? Talk about taking a relatively simple job and making it take 1/2 a Saturday. They mounted anything they could to the radiator support and blocked the damn radiator in with it.

Don't get me wrong, the Northstar was a great running little motor. But man was it a PITA to work on and you'd better have a VISA Gold if it breaks down.

I've wondered about this. Sometimes I wonder if other cars really ARE that bad to work on, or if I'm just pissy about working on it so it seems more of a chore. I'll be honest, I love working on Fords and kind of get excited about it. If somebody asks me if I know whats wrong with their car, my first question is "what is it?". And honestly, my head kicks into another zone (the dread zone) if it's a Dodge, GM, or especially foreign jobs.

Maybe it's all in my head. If it is, there's no sense in reprogramming now. =)

my 4.0 ranger fan is coming apart... well its cracked near the base of the blades... its been like that for around 10 years now... one of these days ill replace it i guess... just been waiting for it to finally give up the ghost i guess lol... that way ill probably have to fix my leaky rad finally too haha.

FYI: Rock Auto has them for $18.65 for mine. I think your fan is the same one.

I got a nearly dead 99 Vortec 350 in my driveway, anybody want to work on it? I also have failed door locks (and not in the easy way to deal with), A blown heater hose, a non functioning A/C, a fuel pump that has a really high pitched buzz to it (and loud too) and going down the road it just randomly dies...... no reason it just shuts off and takes 45 min before it will restart ..... always 45 min (I have discovered this can be cured with starting fluid so I am nearly convinced it has to do with a false reading from the oil pressure switch) and sometimes the ignition goes off but comes right back on like flipping the key causing the whole truck to jerk. this will be my last Chevy built after 1995.

They can all be money pits and have things that are a PITA to replace.

People get used to the quirks with one brand all the sudden every other brand is set up the stupidest possible way to them. It is just what they are used to.

180k and it needs a fan? Big deal, our Explorer got a fan long before that because it was actually falling apart.

Looks all too damn familiar to me. Mom's pos 98 s10 had the same exact problem that I just fixed about a month ago. Looks like you took a picture of the one I took out of hers. Now I have a wheel bearing/hub assembly in the box that needs to be put on. I still like some GM stuff, but this truck has been a pain since right after we bought it. It was just in the shop about two months ago because most of the time most of the gauges wouldn't work, and at the same time the trans had no 1st gear, no o/d , and no t/c lockup. Turned out to be the ignition switch, which fried some wiring with it. There went $488. Thanks GM.

yeah, this '97 blazer my dad gave my wife has been far from free. its great when it runs, but theres been alot to keep it going. the amazing thing is the engine. 175,000+ miles, 180 psi compression on all 6 cylinders, gets 22 highway mpg, only uses 1 qt oil in 4,000 miles. body in good shape. fixed a bad vaccum leak yesterday, whistled like crazy unless your foot was in the gas hard. now the heater works better. all this vac controlled crap doesnt work as well when you have a bad vac leak. and the front axle engagement is vac controlled! going to put a posi-lock in it someday.
