With gas prices on the rise, my ranger isn't looking like something I'm going to want to have as a daily driver.
But I can't really decide on what else I would drive... so I'm going to need suggestions. I don't know all that much about different cars, so hopefully you all will have some ideas from past and present experiences.

What I am considering is vehicles that get above 30mpg, and are in a price range below 2k.
So mainly its 90's cars, altough 80's are also acceptable.

Some that I have already considered.. are Civics, Metros, and Fieros. With Fieros topping the list mainly because they look the best. But they don't have that good mpg.

Any other ideas?

A buddy of mine has a '91 Olds Cutlass...nice little car, big 4 banger. He gets around 30mpg. It rides nice, is cheap to drive, and it's really got some nuts for what it is.

Now you wouldn't be the coolest looking guy driving one of these things, but maybe you could find something similar for cheap. To be honest I always kinda liked the looks of the mid 90's Cutlass's (the 2 door version)

If you're looking for something in the 80's and 90's I'd stay away from most of the V6's...the gas mileage wasn't really all that hot.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the Fieros were/are crap. I remember something about them being a fiery death trap... :nopityA:

hey ya can put a 350 into a fiero!
but please please stay away from them.... they were marketed towards people that like
same sex.
besides they are prone to bursting into flames!

hard to say where things will be in 12 months. keep the truck and get an escort or a little cutlass/buick thing.

Hmm.. I haven't heard anything about the fiery death traps.. I'm going to have to look into that.

Can't afford to keep the truck and buy another car..

--Edit--

Just checked crashtest.com
Apparently... fieros are ranked with 5/5 stars on front and side impacts...?

Well, here is what I think. You will see these prices for another year at the most.

Here is the thing. The market follows the money. When oil was ten dollars a barrel, the market went away from it. There was no reason to increase production when you are only getting ten dollars a barrel. At $140/barrel, people want in on that action. Production is going to come up. When it does, the price is going to go down. That's the way it works.

So, yeah, if you don't need a truck then a car is better. Look at fueleconomy.gov and see what they say it gets for mileage. It might not be right, but it will be good for comparison. And it's usually very close.

I used to have a '87 Buick Century with the 2.5L Iron Duke. Great car in terms a reliability, comfort, and they get reasonable gas millage. Bought it with 90k on her for $1000 and drove it for a couple years under the head cracked at 140,000..... then I bought my Ranger! But they are good cars if your not looking for anything amazing. I'd recommend going for a V6 version of the A-Bodies cause they are so underpowered with the I4 (2.5 and 2.2L's). Those '86 Buick Century GS looked pretty cool for what they are.... rockin' the 3.8L HO engine.

I really don't see the prices going down.. It's just going to go higher and higher.

okay, maybe I overexaggerated a little, but Wikipedia has a little more info on the matter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiero#Engine_fire_reputation
That was only stupid people that don't know how to take care of their cars.

not to be rude but I don't understand why you are complaing about gas when you have a 2wd ranger, you must get atleast 20-25 mpg with your 3.0 all around, but if you are really worried then you should get a car

I get 18mpg.
And I can't afford that, because I don't have a (normal) job at the moment, and even when I do get one, I need to save my money for a place to live.. not spend half of it on gas..
