Ok i dont know if this is the right spot to ask or not but im in the process of restoring my 68 mustang. Its sanded to bare metal with a da and i have etch primer for it. What im wondering is can i put the etch primer on and then put body filler or epoxy primer over it. Or whats the right way to do this. I wanna do it right since it is a 1968 mustang. Some help please.

what type of etch primer are you using? yes you can put a light body filler or metal glaze over it, otherwise the best thing to do is sand the spots with dents back to bare, fill the dent, feather it out, then apply a highbuild primer or primer surfacer. but remember so you dont have any problems, etch primer is for bare metal only. good luck on the restoration

best way ive found,

high build primer, u-pol is the best ive used, also rust defender

body filler

high build primer.

then continue, sandwich the filler inbetween, this prevents the filler from popping back

body filler is meant to be used on bare metal, this is where it works best. if you want to do things the right way sand down to bare metal where the dents are then apply filler, smooth, then etch and primer filler.

if you dont exceed 1/8" thick there is no need to worry about it popping out.

i am under the impression that filler works best on bare metal (but will work over primer as well) and primer sealer works best on top of the filler,

and etching primer works exclusively on bare, extremely clean metal. and in the case of aluminum: acid-etching the metal first helps even more.

yea thats basically it. also, again depending on the epoxy product, you can seal the car with epoxy after all the body work, last layer before paint, and it will stop the spread of rust or prevent the start of rust on the out side.

:worthless:

Sorry, just had to do it...I'm a sucker for mustangs. I'll be painting my 67 this summer, and hopefully the 69 by next year. Good luck.

On a restoration project like this it would be best to epoxy coat (follow directions for the epoxy...there is usually special instructions if you are going to put filler over it) the bare metal to seal the metal and prevent rust. You can apply body filler over epoxy primer. It is not recommended to put filler over high build or etch primer. Also you DO NOT want to use both epoxy and etch primer it is strictly one or the other and never the two should meet! After the body work is done scuff sand all the epoxy and coat everything with a high build primer or sprayable polyester. FWIW I was a tech rep for a major paint manufacturer for 5 years.
